playing with aperture stop

With the aperture stop of your camera you influence the depth of field (DOF), which is the distance in front of and behind the subject which appears to be in focus.
Most cameras can be switched to aperture mode, usually called A. In this mode, you can select the aperture manually.

In food photography you usually want to keep the focus on the subject, the meal itself and not something in the fore- or background. Try out smaller f-numbers on your camera. The DOF can also be too small. Happens to me often enough. Just having the tip of the broccoli focused and nothing else of the meal probably misses the point.

Since you are probably using a digital camera, try out different settings. Lack of focus is not something you can add later in Photoshop.

South Shetland Islands and Antarctica

The inclined equatorial orbit of the International Space Station (ISS) limits astronauts to nadir views of Earth—looking straight down from the spacecraft—between approximately 52 degrees North latitude and 52 degrees South. However, when viewing conditions are ideal, the crew can obtain detailed oblique images—looking outwards at an angle—of features at higher latitudes, such as Greenland or, in this image, Antarctica.

While the bulk of the continent of Antarctica sits over the South Pole, the narrow Antarctic Peninsula extends like a finger towards the tip of South America. The northernmost part of the Peninsula is known as Graham Land, a small portion of which (located at approximately 64 degrees South latitude) is visible at the top left in this astronaut photograph.

Off the coast of Graham Land to the north-northwest, two of the South Shetland Islands—Livingston Island and Deception Island—are visible. Both have volcanic origins, and active volcanism at Deception Island has been recorded since 1800. (The last verified eruptive activity occurred in 1970.) Closer to the coastline of Graham Land, Brabant Island (not part of the South Shetlands) also includes numerous outcrops of volcanic rock, attesting to the complex tectonic history of the region.

The ISS was located over the South Atlantic Ocean, approximately 1,800 kilometers (1,100 miles) to the northeast when this image was taken. This long viewing distance, combined with the highly oblique angle, accentuates the shadowing of the ground and provides a sense of the topography similar to the view you get from an airplane. It also causes foreshortening of features in the image, making them appear closer to each other than they actually are. For example, the distance between Livingston and Deception Islands is approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles).

Astronaut photograph ISS029-E-41836 was acquired on October 4, 2011, with a Nikon D3 digital camera using a 1200 mm lens, and is provided by the ISS Crew Earth Observations experiment and Image Science & Analysis Laboratory, Johnson Space Center. The image was taken by the Expedition 29 crew. The image has been cropped and enhanced to improve contrast. Lens artifacts have been removed. The International Space Station Program supports the laboratory as part of the ISS National Lab to help astronauts take pictures of Earth that will be of the greatest value to scientists and the public, and to make those images freely available on the Internet. Additional images taken by astronauts and cosmonauts can be viewed at the NASA/JSC Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth. Caption by William L. Stefanov, Jacobs/ESCG at NASA-JSC.

The Earth Observatory’s mission is to share with the public the images, stories, and discoveries about climate and the environment that emerge from NASA research, including its satellite missions, in-the-field research, and climate models.

Pretty Stray

there’s a lot of plant growth around the backyard which is home to a population of feral cats. they’re all the descendents of about four cats that my ex-neighbors brought here ten years ago or more. i think this is a female; she’s been wandering around the yard tonight. she has extremely strange tail markings, which barely show up here. her tail is solid orange until about 1/3rd of the way from the tip, where it changes abruptly to grey tiger stripes. she makes a lot of noise but like most of the other strays, just wants to be left alone. from the grey tail markings, i’m certain she’s a relative of Kitty several generations removed.

this is NOT the mean-spirited stray who’s climbs on the flowerbox in front of my bedroom window and terrorizes Kitty. i’ll post a picture of that one soon.

this was VERY dark originally, so i used picasa’s fine tuning to up the contrast to a usable level without blowing out the white fur. without the high ISO, this would have been ruined by camera shake.

Victoria & Albert Museum – Decode: Digital Design Sensations. "The viewer use a hairdryer to blow the seeds by pointing the hairdryer at the projected dandelion on the screen. The seeds can be blown around after they have come off and the grass also reacts to the hairdryer. We use an infrared camera to track an infrared beam of light coming from a light source in the tip of the hairdryer. A speaker in the hairdryer plays an adaptive hairdryer sound and speakers in front of the screen play a soundscape that changes depending on where you blow."

John specializes in soccer photography, and as the team photographer for Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes and the US Men and Women’s soccer teams, he has taken a number of stunning pictures over his career. John’s style is to take bold, beautiful images. He keeps the background clean so the actions and emotions of his subject are the clear focus of the photo. He follows one of Ansel Adams’ best photography tips: think about the end result before you take the picture, and use your mind as a tool to achieve that goal. His advice for amateurs is to move beyond your camera’s full auto settings and learn how to use manual settings for focus, lighting, and exposure.
