Tamron 70-200 Review by a Canon DSLR User

Posted: May 24, 2011 |Comments: 0
|

I am very excited to do this Tamron 70-200 review. The lens is available for Canon, Nikon (with built-in motor), Pentax, and Sony cameras.

I tested this lens on my Canon DSLR camera. My Canon DSLR camera is a cropped sensor Canon EOS 7D camera.

This lens costs less than half that of a premium model fast telephoto zoom and yet performs most of the functions of the latter.

It has a very impressive optical quality, with minimal distortion. As the chromatic aberration is negligible, I was able to take some great portrait pictures. The contrast, clarity and sharpness of this lens will make for a good picture.

This lens is also very appropriate for studio work and portraiture. With this lens, I was able to produce well-focused portraits with a soft or blurred background (also called bokeh).

While this lens will not be able to compete with Canon’s L lenses lineup, the build quality is quite decent and solid. Made of high quality plastic, the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 lens exudes a professional and solid feel that would appeal to both beginners and professional shooter alike.

I can vouch for the zoom ring – it is very smooth and easy to operate. I’ve also pointed out in my Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 review that this lens is also lighter than its competitors, making it easier to use. This is also especially helpful for travel photographers who do not want to carry heavy telephoto lens on their trip.

Although lightweight, I find it very easy to handle this lens especially when focusing to capture the mood of the scene. Because of its light weight, you can easily handle this lens and keep it steady at the same time.

However, unlike its more expensive counterparts, the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is slow to focus as it has no focus limiter. I was unable to capture sporting events with this lens due to the slow autofocus. If only this lens has a focus limiter, it would certainly be the dream telephoto lens.

I admit that it will be difficult to even focus on kids running around in the playground. The autofocus is also noisier, alerting children to my presence. I used the manual focus option for better results.

I will certainly not take this lens when I plan on shooting fast moving objects or sports photography.

In summary, this is a very good lens for portraiture or studio work, but less so for sports photography.
