For more than 30 years, the Aptucxet Garden Club of Bourne, Massachusetts has sponsored an annual Arbor Day celebration, most often with 2nd and 3rd grade Bourne school students since these students study local history as part of their curriculum. The 2011 Arbor Day Celebration took place at Bourne’s Peebles Elementary School. The theme celebrated the 100th Arbor Day Anniversary of the nationwide Catalpa Tree Planting project. Saplings from a Catalpa tree planted at the Cataumet Schoolhouse 100 years ago were dug and conditioned for replanting on Arbor Day under the direction of garden club members including Junior Gardener chairman Laura Bergeron.
Under the guidance of Aptucxet Garden Club members and assisted by John York, local historian, five 3rd graders transplanted the Catalpa saplings from their location on the Cataumet Schoolhouse grounds into containers to prepare the saplings for replanting on Arbor Day April 29, 2011.
On Arbor Day, all 200 Peebles Elementary School students attended an Assembly along with parents, community leaders and Aptucxet Garden Club members. Students from the four 2nd grades collaborated on singing This Land is Your Land and Flowers Won’t Grow. Each class was represented by a student reading a poem.
After the Assembly, everyone moved to the school grounds where the three saplings were planted by five students, assisted by John York (garden club son) and garden club members. Annual flowers enhance the small trees and protect them from the lawn mowers until they grow larger.
The garden club provided instruction and project coordination, supplied mulch, enriched soil and watering during the first summer when no school maintenance crew is scheduled.

Inside a modern SD card

I suppose it’s not very surprising, but it still seems interesting to me.
This card was "stuck" in that the write-protect nubbin had no effect and the card could not be written-to. So I pulled it appart to see if there was something wrong with the electrical circuit before the "should have been obvious" penny dropped. Nevertheless reassembling (Not even glued, just held-together by the confines of the SD card slot) resulted in the r/w nubbin working again.
(That’s the little grey nubbin on the right).

What happened to the idea of innocent until proven guilty? It appears that in the case of traffic infringements it’s guilty until the offending party proves that they are innocent.
And how can you prove your innocent? Well if you wish to dispute the matter on the penalty notice you are pleasantly suggested that you may wish to consider your options to have the penalty notice decided in court where a magistrate can impose a range of penalties or decide to show leniency after considering the evidence. Revenue raising do you say? Never, it’s all in the name of safety, don’t be so cynical!
In NSW it appears as through the State Debt Recovery will not overturn a fine even though it is unable to present conclusive evidence showing the offending vehicle with all wheels behind stop line (the 1st horizontal line) and the red signal displayed, and a subsequent photo of the same car completely entered into the intersection. This is unusual considering this is exactly what is available to those that run red light cameras in the United States.
After numerous email queries, and ambiguous responses regarding the evidence produced against me, I was advised the photographs clearly show the vehicle entering the intersection after the light had turned red. Moreover, traffic lights remain on amber for at least four seconds to warn motorists to stop and that when a vehicle passes over a metal-sensitive loop at the stop line it activates the camera (albeit with a lengthy delay, in camera operation terms, it seems). To activate the camera, the RTA (Road and Traffic Authority) advises, that a vehicle must cross the stop line and proceed through the intersection after the light has turned red. The camera first takes a photograph of the rear of the vehicle and then a second photograph is taken to confirm the vehicle has travelled through the intersection. Which leaves me with another question, can these road sensors for the red light camera distinguish between the front and rear wheels of the car crossing the stop line?
What ever happened to the notion of ‘beyond reasonable doubt’?

Pretty Stray

there’s a lot of plant growth around the backyard which is home to a population of feral cats. they’re all the descendents of about four cats that my ex-neighbors brought here ten years ago or more. i think this is a female; she’s been wandering around the yard tonight. she has extremely strange tail markings, which barely show up here. her tail is solid orange until about 1/3rd of the way from the tip, where it changes abruptly to grey tiger stripes. she makes a lot of noise but like most of the other strays, just wants to be left alone. from the grey tail markings, i’m certain she’s a relative of Kitty several generations removed.
this is NOT the mean-spirited stray who’s climbs on the flowerbox in front of my bedroom window and terrorizes Kitty. i’ll post a picture of that one soon.
this was VERY dark originally, so i used picasa’s fine tuning to up the contrast to a usable level without blowing out the white fur. without the high ISO, this would have been ruined by camera shake.
