Olympus Camedia C-160 Digital Camera
smallest digital camera

Image by Arty Smokes (deaf mute)
Launched in 2004, the Camedia C-160 is a small compact digital camera at the budget end of the spectrum. It’s ideal for the occasional snapshot and has a reasonably good macro function (20cm) making it ideal for taking photos of products to be sold on eBay. Indeed, that’s what my mum used it for before she upgraded to a Panasonic Lumix.
Although I inherited this camera about a year ago, I never actually took a half decent photo with it and much preferred my mobile phone for street shooting. My main problems with the Olympus were the way it ate batteries like they were Cheerios and a memory card with as much room as a gnat’s chuff.
There’s nothing remotely special about this camera. The sliding lens cover design is one Olympus has been using for compacts since the classic XA, but the case is made from cheap plastic that shows every little abrasion. (My photos make the camera look metallic, but it’s really not that shiny).
Specifications:
1/2.7 inch CCD with 3.2 million pixels.
The 5-element lens has a focal length of just 5mm, but coupled with the tiny sensor it provides a field of vision like a 33mm full-frame. The maximum ISO equivalent is a quite pathetic 150. The aperture is relatively fast and wide, however, at a maximum of f/2.8. Shutter speeds: 2 – 1/800s.
There is a real viewfinder, which is small but usable. The LCD is a modest 1.5" version.
4 scenes modes, TTL autoexposure, various flash modes and autofocus just about round off this distinctly underwhelming piece of kit. Like many old digital cameras, it’s worth less than the batteries it requires.

Autumn Cottonwood Twin Peaks View.
photo greeting cards

Image by Striking Photography by Bo
Autumn has to be the best time of year. Amazing colors and fantastic fall weather. Harvest time, Halloween and then Thanksgiving. Out in the country you feel the season in full gear. Pumpkins everywhere, fields of hay bails and a view like this. The Rocky Mountains twin peaks. "Longs Peak" on the North, 14,256′ and "Mt. Meeker" 13,911′ on the South. A view through autumn yellow cottonwood trees with one of the first snow dusting of the season. This image was taken from Berthoud. playing with aperture stop
digital camera tips

With the aperture stop of your camera you influence the depth of field (DOF), which is the distance in front of and behind the subject which appears to be in focus.
Most cameras can be switched to aperture mode, usually called A. In this mode, you can select the aperture manually.

In food photography you usually want to keep the focus on the subject, the meal itself and not something in the fore- or background. Try out smaller f-numbers on your camera. The DOF can also be too small. Happens to me often enough. Just having the tip of the broccoli focused and nothing else of the meal probably misses the point.

Since you are probably using a digital camera, try out different settings. Lack of focus is not something you can add later in Photoshop.

South Shetland Islands and Antarctica
digital camera tips

The inclined equatorial orbit of the International Space Station (ISS) limits astronauts to nadir views of Earth—looking straight down from the spacecraft—between approximately 52 degrees North latitude and 52 degrees South. However, when viewing conditions are ideal, the crew can obtain detailed oblique images—looking outwards at an angle—of features at higher latitudes, such as Greenland or, in this image, Antarctica.

While the bulk of the continent of Antarctica sits over the South Pole, the narrow Antarctic Peninsula extends like a finger towards the tip of South America. The northernmost part of the Peninsula is known as Graham Land, a small portion of which (located at approximately 64 degrees South latitude) is visible at the top left in this astronaut photograph.

Off the coast of Graham Land to the north-northwest, two of the South Shetland Islands—Livingston Island and Deception Island—are visible. Both have volcanic origins, and active volcanism at Deception Island has been recorded since 1800. (The last verified eruptive activity occurred in 1970.) Closer to the coastline of Graham Land, Brabant Island (not part of the South Shetlands) also includes numerous outcrops of volcanic rock, attesting to the complex tectonic history of the region.

The ISS was located over the South Atlantic Ocean, approximately 1,800 kilometers (1,100 miles) to the northeast when this image was taken. This long viewing distance, combined with the highly oblique angle, accentuates the shadowing of the ground and provides a sense of the topography similar to the view you get from an airplane. It also causes foreshortening of features in the image, making them appear closer to each other than they actually are. For example, the distance between Livingston and Deception Islands is approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles).

Astronaut photograph ISS029-E-41836 was acquired on October 4, 2011, with a Nikon D3 digital camera using a 1200 mm lens, and is provided by the ISS Crew Earth Observations experiment and Image Science & Analysis Laboratory, Johnson Space Center. The image was taken by the Expedition 29 crew. The image has been cropped and enhanced to improve contrast. Lens artifacts have been removed. The International Space Station Program supports the laboratory as part of the ISS National Lab to help astronauts take pictures of Earth that will be of the greatest value to scientists and the public, and to make those images freely available on the Internet. Additional images taken by astronauts and cosmonauts can be viewed at the NASA/JSC Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth. Caption by William L. Stefanov, Jacobs/ESCG at NASA-JSC.

The Earth Observatory’s mission is to share with the public the images, stories, and discoveries about climate and the environment that emerge from NASA research, including its satellite missions, in-the-field research, and climate models.

8th Day of 25 Days til Christmas: selling my stuff at the school Christmas boutique
photo greeting cards

Well, I worked night and day, and a week or so before this event, and got a lot of help from my good flickr friend Jim, and I did it, I actually went out and sat and sold my prints, greeting cards, and on-the-spot instant photos in a Christmas holiday boutique at my son’s school for 6 hours on Saturday. I did OK. Sold 12 cards, 2 prints, and 2 instant photos, and gave away one door prize, an 8X10 portrait. A nice lady named Irene won the portrait, and she was tickled pink to have her picture taken. I took about a half dozen shots and she selected the one she liked best. She was a kick ass 83 year old grandma and I hope to God I can be just like her and be as alive and kicking and live to be 83 and still selling my stuff like she was doing. It was a fun experience, and I learned a hellava lot today.
