Me and my boyfriend have never owned a digital camera before and were very excited when we brought one from Jessops with a 2gig memory card.
We went on holiday and had a fantastic time taking pictures as we went along at the beautiful scenery and pukka places we went to, it was our first holiday together i would like to add. we were very pleased with our Camera until towards the end of the holiday every time we tried to look at our photos it would come up with the error
“READ ERROR” but it looked like our photos were still being saved to the memory card .
when we got back we tried to get our photos off the card but we could only recover 120 of them witch was no way near as many as we had taken as we were on holiday for two weeks.
we finally decided to take our camera back to jessops who were very unhelpfull they informed us it was the memory card and that the could replace it for us witch did’nt help our lack of holiday photo problem.
One of my friends had a recovery programe that we tried to use on our memory card but unfortunatly there was still no luck and no other photos were recovered.
My question is really what do i do now because i am unable to get my holiday photos of a holiday that i cant repeat. I am soooo pissed off and i would like some sort of compensation or help has anyone been in this situation before? What is the correct way to go about it?

There probably is no way. Flash memory cards do go bad, and there is nothing you can do about that.

It’s the same thing as if your cat gets run over by a car and is nothing but a splat left on the road. Nothing much you can do to bring the cat back, it is gone. So are your photos.

A friend of mine asked me earlier today about the difference in depth of field (DoF) between a budget digital SLR & a digital compact camera. The "received wisdom" in photographic circles is that you can’t match the DoF of a dSLR with a compact due to the small size of the sensor on the compact & the corresponding small optics.

I had no idea what that meant in practice – could a good compact be good enough ? And how good a job could you do with an ‘out of the box’ kit lens on the dSLR?

In the second part, I’ve optimised to what I think is the best I can manage in terms of reducing the depth-of-focus for the compact (the dSLR image is the same), by moving closer to the subject & zooming out a little & getting close to the minimum focus distance for the compact. I’ve also gone to the maximum aperture for this camera, a not too shabby f2.8.

Because the camera is closer & a wider zoom setting selected, the perspective is exaggerated, making C2PO look further away – he’s in exactly the same position as in the other photos.

He’s a little more out of focus, but it still isn’t anywhere close to the dSLR, which could go out to f3.5 from the f5.6 this was taken at (would have involved zooming out & cropping, as the maximum aperture is different at different zoom ranges on this cheap lens).

Here is my photo junk, I got some new stuff, moved around some existing stuff and generally spent some time cleaning things up. I decided to take a photo since everythings all spiffy organized now.

NOTE: This photo is kinda out of date… things tha thave changed include adding another White Lighting X1600, an extra large softbox, a bunch of new grip gear (Avenger C Stands, Manfrotto Boom Stand, etc.).

Not everything goes every place, I often pick select items or cases and take just what I need. I have links to seperate photos of each case with more detailed information with what’s in each case on the photo as notes.

NOTE: This photo made it into Flickr’s ‘Explore" as one of the top five hundred most interesting photos on a particular day, which makes me somewhat sad as the actual resulting photos didn’t make it, ha! You can see all of my photo’s that have made it into the Flickr Explore pages here.

This slate blue long-sleeve tee is the May 2007 gift from the W3C to their Members attending the spring Advisory Committee Meeting. We’re in Banff (!!), Alberta, Canada and this area is gorgeous.

My mother-in-law lives next door and has a lovely garden. In the summer I would wander over there in search of photographic treasure. This year for Christmas I used the photos I had taken of flowers, birds, and butterflies in her garden to create a set of blank cards that she can use to write her friends and relatives, which she does quite often. She was delighted with them.
I did the same thing for my sister a couple of years ago, only using photos of her watercolors. She loved them. It’s a good gift for people who still stay in contact the old-fashion way.
